Sign lighting standards (lumens and Kelvin)
A debate over the Isabella sign's brightness exposed confusion about dimmers, lumens and color temperature, with the applicant admitting his proposal exceeded the city's lumen guideline. Commissioners asked staff to clarify these standards in future reports and possibly update the sign guidelines.
SVMH rooftop sign appeal at 5 Lower Ragsdale
Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare wanted a ~3,537-square-foot rooftop logo sign visible mainly from the air to market its Ryan Ranch campus. The council said no, calling it advertising rather than identification and refusing to set a precedent outside the sign code.
Shell station signage standards at 398 Fremont
The Shell station's replacement signs mostly swap out old Exxon-era signage, but staff flagged inconsistencies with the sign ordinance — including a red glowing canopy band and digital price signs. Conditions require removing the light band and shielding the price signage.
Rooster Prohibition Ordinance
Following about ten complaints since 2020 and a neighborhood-led push, the council passed to second reading an ordinance effectively banning roosters in the city while still allowing hens.
